Estela Morales: I am from México, I am married and we have a 20 month old son. I came to America in 2007. Then, I validated my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in Accounting. Although I had a degree, it was hard for me to find a job because I didn’t know much English. I took English as a Second Language (ESL) at the Adult Education Center in Hartford and at Capital Community College. Therefore, I had the opportunity to start working at the Adult Education Center in Hartford’s Child Care Center. A few years later, I worked in the GED Test Center, and today as Program Specialist.
As an immigrant it is important to get involved in the community. I have served on the School’s Governance Council for the Adult Education Center in Hartford for about five years. Also, I have been one of the Co-Chairs of Voices of Connecticut Adult Learners (VOCAL) since 2010. In addition this year, I was invited to join the Hartford Commission on Refugee and Immigrant Affairs. These experiences have helped me to adapt to this country in wonderful ways. My family is my inspiration. They are my motivation to keep improving and to move forward. I believe that, if I am committed to my dreams they will become true. God bless America. It has been a wonderful journey!
